Time management matters because how we spend our time shapes who and what we become.

  • We spend time in the gym regularly, we’ll be stronger and healthier.
  • We spend time reading, we’ll gain knowledge about the topic we’re reading.
  • We spend time with Jill and Jack, we’ll get to know Jill and Jack better!

And it works vice versa. Who and what we have become dictates how we spend our time.

  • If we are athletes, we will prioritize going to the gym and work out.
  • If we are intellectually curious about something, we’ll pick up some books about the topic to learn.
  • If we are friends with Jill and Jack, we’ll hang out with them more often.

This is why time management is self management. And self management is time management! If you think you are wasting your time and you want to improve your time management skill, you need to consider the following questions first.

How do you spend your time? Are you aware of how you live your day?

Try to recall your day and record what you were actually doing at each hour. See what emerges from examining what you were doing and how you were spending your time. What you will find here speaks volumes about your identity and value because what we do shapes who we are and who we are dictates what we do.

Your Ultimate Freedom

Many things in life are out of your control. You don’t have a lot of control over what happens to you. Life just happens to you! You couldn’t choose your family. You couldn’t control what names and gender you were given at birth. Heck, it wasn’t even your will to be in this life in the first place! There are a lot of things you just can’t control in your life.

But, you DO have control over your time. Everyone has 24 hours in a day and how you spend each hour is up to you. You can choose to spend your day by prioritizing what to do and what not to do. Isn’t this a great progress considering the fact that you didn’t even have a choice in the matter of your birth?

Setting your priority is your ultimate freedom.

Priority means making a choice and exercising your freedom. The more freedom you have in your life the happier you’ll feel. Priority is basically how we choose to use time: What we decide to do first in a given time. And we will choose to do what we think is important. We will prioritize what we think is important. And we decide what we think is important based on our sense of who we are.

What kind of person are you? That determines the question of your priority. and your priority determines how you will spend your day. This is your ultimate freedom.

Conclusion

Your sense of identity dictates what you value. And what you value dictates what you prioritize and what you do first in your day. To better manage your time, consider who you are and what you value as important.
