You Can Change the Future.
You are the sum of everything you have done from the past.
- You in the present know how to play the guitar or speak a foreign language because you in the past have been working at those skills.
- You in the present are known for being gentle and kind among your friends because you in the past have built that reputation.
You are who you are now because you did something in the past that made you who you are now.
Whoever you dream to be in the future, you can be that person if you do something now that will make you the person you want to be in the future.
- You can’t expect to be a writer if you are not writing today.
- You can’t expect to be healthy and energetic if you are not eating healthy or exercising today.
Your future depends on your present. How you spend your day today will determine what you will become tomorrow.
No one accidentally becomes great. They discipline themselves and aspire to be great one day at a time.
Here’s another twist.
If you have done something that aligns with your future self today, then you have a claim to your not yet realized future self. Let’s be honest. Just because you have worked out one day for 30 minutes, you won’t immediately have a chiseled body or be able to run a full marathon. But, that’s not the point.
The point is that you showed up.
You exercised the way your future self would have worked out. You ate healthy just as your future self would have eaten. Although your present self isn’t looking like your future self yet, you lived today just like your future self would have lived. And that’s the point. Your today will make your tomorrow, just as your yesterday made your today.
Think about your past. When you were practicing your first guitar lesson a year ago, you didn’t have the skills you have now. But, your past self kept practicing and, eventually, your present self is able to play like your past self had always dreamed of. Likewise, as you keep living the way your future self would live, you will be your future self, your dream self, sooner or later.
You can change your future by changing the way you live now. One day at a time.
