I heard a podcast a while ago that featured Cal Newport. Find the link below. There are three things I learned about focus from this podcast.

  1. I need to manage my brain, my focus, my attention ability in order to keep it at its optimal level even when I’m not using it for work. What am I doing with my brain when I rest? Don’t feed junk food to your brain. So don’t waste your time and energy on social media or anything like that right after work. Perhaps, take a moment to meditate or just remain in silence to give your brain the rest it deserves!
  2. Being curious is always a good thing. But being curious about too many things at the same time might not be such a good thing. When our brain engages in one thing after another on a shallow level, that can tire the brain too quickly. Our brain is not built for multi-tasking. Don’t spread out thin. Stay long enough to gain some expertise on one thing before jumping on to another. Pursue deep curiosity!
  3. Talent is overrated. You need to work hard in you want to be good at something. Talent will only get you started. What sustains you is hard work. Be consistent and work diligently even when you don’t see the result fast. It will take time. Every good thing that worth anything takes time. It’s natural.

Conclusion

  • Make sure you rest after you put in a lot of effort to focus.
  • Don’t let curiosity deter you from focusing on one thing for a long period of time.
  • Perhaps, the best talent you should ask for is an ability to work hard and focus.
